Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a way to explore and understand thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that can affect us and hold us back in our ability to live life to its fullest.
Psychotherapy for the individuals

Rathfarnham psychotherapy centre, created by Ursula Somerville, offering a warm and accepting setting in the heart of the community in the village of rathfarnham where you can “Come Home to Yourself”

Psychotherapy for the individual is a process of exploration and healing whereby you (the client), through a confidential relationship with Ursula, is helped to explore, understand and alleviate concerns and difficulties. In our life journey we may experience situations where our development may have had an interruption from a trauma or life incident we may not have been expecting. The humanistic approach respects and accepts you as a whole person who has the potential to change, heal and grow. Ursula works as a Humanistic and Integrative psychotherapist and she has many broad and creative approaches which she uses in her work.

Sand Therapy

The technique is enormously useful with both adults and children.

When you choose to work with sand it allows you the experience of becoming aware of issues which can be difficult to talk about or, at some level, are even unknown.

It is not always necessary to verbalise what is happening in the sand but the use of sand and symbolic figures help us to understand more deeply, in the subconscious and unconscious, long held beliefs and habits – some of which no longer serve us well.

While working with sand we can either place figures in the sand tray or simply move the sand about and when this task is done we will have a very special part of our self in front of us. This special part will be the long held experiences which did not find voice.

The therapist is the witness to this story. The technique is enormously useful with both adults and children.

My Biography

About Me

I listen for a living!

I listen in a unique way where I really hear the language of the unconscious of my clients. This is important, for when you talk about difficult things in psychotherapy it’s not the same as telling your friends about your story. You can expect me to enquire, gently, in order to understand in a different way, the nuances of your story. You may need to tell your story a few times before you can have a different relationship with it, as the unconscious gives up its hold on the ways that hold you back and instead allows you to become the person you were born to be.

Sometimes it’s difficult to talk in sessions. However, I welcome this and indeed use these silences to deepen the work. I also practice a nonverbal model of therapy called sand therapy in the session: a powerful way of freeing up the unconscious which both facilitates and enables free expression.

I hold a Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy as well as postgraduate diplomas in: Gestalt Therapy, Child Psychotherapy, Play Therapy and Group Facilitation. I have also completed additional training in Jungian Sand Therapy.

I am an accredited member of The Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and The Association for Jungian Sand Therapy in Ireland (AJSTI). In addition, I am a Registrant with The Irish Council for Psychotherapy, European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP).

As an accredited clinical Supervisor with The Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP) and a recognised Supervisor with The Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). I am available to supervise counsellors and psychotherapists together with other practitioners in the health and mental health profession to include social care workers.

As a Psychotherapist, Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist with over 20 years’ experience of working in the field of human relationships. I was invited to deliver training and share my interest in sand therapy and play therapy in the St Petersburg University in Russia in 2010 and University of Minnesota in the USA in 2011.

My work involves helping clients deal with and come to terms with any of the whole range of emotional feelings linked to: depression, relationship issues, bereavement, suicidal thoughts, illness, sexual issues and general stress; all can make it difficult to cope with everyday life experiences.

If you have experienced a major life event (i.e. relationship breakup, bereavement, loss of job, change in financial situation…) or if indeed you feel a bit “flat” and the usual coping skill like “getting on with it” or “bouncing back” are no longer working for you, this is a good indicator to seek out professional help to restore you to the person you were born to become.
